Random system lockup on video playback

Bug Description

I'm getting random system lockups on playing back video (confirmed with mp4, wmv, aspx, flv, m4v) with all my players (MPlayer, VLC, Xine, Democracy TV player and MPlayer plugin in Swiftfox). It can happen at different places or not at all with the same video clip. The desktop will freeze (everything apart from mouse pointer movement) and the sound will continue for a little while (varying amounts) before also stopping.

I am using Ubuntu DD 6.06, 2.6.15-27-amd64-k8. I have installed the 32bit codecs and MPlayer32 (are all the above filetypes related to this?). This has only been happening recently (or so it seems, maybe I've been lucky with the randomness until lately).

I've also searched the logs but can find nothing incriminating (bare in mind I'm a relative noob though).

I have no problem with DVD playback.

Thanks ... Paul

Ok... I've tried this with the two previous k8 kernels with the same result and after much fiddling I'm 99% sure it's down to the 'Deskbar' panel applet. I will contact the Deskbar people and inform them of my suspicion.

I'm going to upgrade to Edgy in the next few days so maybe this particular bug should be closed?

Thanks ... Paul

Happens on Edgy with 2.6.17 kernel too. They are completely random lockups during playback of media files. I think it's got to do something with nvidia driver or xorg.

kern.log just before lockup shows the line:
NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0000 0cb8 00000000 0000fdf4 867effff 441c1347

I have the same/a similar problem, running xubuntu (6.10, 2.6.17-10-generic) on an Acer TravelMate C102TCi Tablet PC. In my case only the player freezes, everything else works fine, but I need to reboot (!) to play videos again. Restarting X doesn't help.

might be related to my bug specifically (I am using the same video card) or to this bug in general.

I have identical symptoms on Intrepid, intel based notebook and ATI X1350 video card with default free driver.

What can I do to help debug this ?
