Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I installed the vlc player using command line apt-get command
When i run the vlc player or run any video file using the vlc player the gnome session crashes and i am redirected to the login screen.
I have enabled the apport tool and reproduced the crash which upon login after the crash brought up the apport window and reported the bug.
Since the bug is being logged by the system all the required files will be attached automatically.
Please advice any further logging steps.

this crash does not occur on my i386 intel Pentium M laptop.
but only on my desktop with the attached configuration.

I had reported the same issue on vlc bug reporting tool..
They said there might be a problem with compiz. Try to disable to compiz and then run the player.
Now how do i disable compiz??

VLC people have rendered in the bug as invalid stating that there is some problem with the XServer on my desktop as they have tested it in all conditions that VLC is working fine.
The bug has been closed in the VLC development forum.
Hence something is wrong in the Ubuntu X server and its configuration on my Desktop.
Please help what can be wrong

I am using Nvidia propriety Ubuntu recommended drivers for my Nvidia 9800GT graphics card.
