Bug Description

I am trying to install Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop for i386, built on 20061017.2, on a Sony VAIO VGN-SZ140P. This machine worked with 6.10 Knot 3 and passed all tests. Also, the CD was checked for defects and none were found.

When installing with the default options and choosing to overwrite the disk (no resizing), the process crashes with an error window with the same content as the attached syslog. I have also attached the dmesg file for system information.

Could you please attach /var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/partman to this bug? thanks :)

Sorry Marc, but this shows the classic symptoms of a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, or to clean the CD/DVD drive lens.

Failing that, in future kernel oopses are kernel bugs, not ubiquity bugs.

This happens to me as well (on a brand new Latitude D620 just taken out of the box).
Why is it failing to read the CD if I succesfully verified it from the boot menu?

Same here, I had checked the CD for defects and none were found.

Bug 67784 has the same symptoms. I was bitten by it too.

I had this issue on my testmachine as well, apparently dholbach was bitten by it too. The CD is reported to be all right by the cdrom check. I wonder if this is hardware dependant?

My ide controllers are:
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) IDE Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller AHCI (rev 02)

I will also attach my syslog log from the failed install (sorry, I was not able to recover more then everything started to fall appart in my livefs environemnt).

It looks like this error is happening on ICH6,7 chipsets (from the data I gathered so far in the bugreports).I re-test now with a 4x burned CD-R.

I got the same problem on a new CDR medium burned with low-speed. I don't think it is a medium problem.

I looked over the older bugreports with this zlib failure and here are the findings and the used HW:
#66779 (Marc): ICH-7M
#66779 (mvo): ICH-7
#66779 (dholbach): ICH-6
#67784: ICH-8 (apparently)
#67159: ich6
#67216: ich-8

No intel ICH chipset that fail:
#56253: hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } - cd/hw issue most likely
#61868: hdc: command error: error=0x51 { IllegalLengthIndication LastFailedSense=0x05 } - nforce2 - cd/hw issue most likely
#60941: unclear failure but via chipset

Unknown:
#67417: no hardware info

This may well be just coincidence (given how widespread the intel chipset is).

Cheers,
 Michael

I subscribed Simon Law who has a identical sony test machine available.

Simon, I would really appreciate if you could test a normal live-cd desktop install and confirm if it works/fails. If it fails, I would be interessted in the syslog/dmesg output.

Thanks,
 Michael

I've installed this about four times now, and it doesn't fail any more. Sorry.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached its end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
