Ditto. Same problem on a Kubuntu 10.10 live usb installation.

I believe this is a problem in casper. I believe it is supposed to modify the livecd to disable update-grub from being run.

I can confirm this. Is there at least a workaround bring apt back to a working state?

I added

if [ -e /cdrom/casper/ ]; then
    exit 0
fi

in the beginning of /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub as a naive workaround.

I'm experiencing this issue as well. The suggested workaround worked very well to get rid the annoying error messages everytime apt-get is used.

pat, did you mean to mark this as in progress, not fix released?

Pat, you seem to be new to launchpad. Please don't modify bugs in ways that you do not understand.

Same problem here: installed Ubuntu 10.10 on USB with startup creator, got this message almost immediately!

Tried the workaround, so was able to do a clean apt-get upgrade, but still have:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  cups linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded.

Are there any solutions to this? Had to install 10.10 instead of 11.4 due to bugs in casper and 11.4...

thanks
