Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

I decided to begin testing unity as it stands and installed it on top of my standard Maverick installation.

The first major problem I have hit is that many windows, menus and other aspects of the screen are drawn with a horizontal slant that makes them unusable.

This can be viewed at: http://www.martineve.com/unity_drawing_problem.png

The interface is also extremely slow in all applications and a quick "top" shows that mutter is consistently using 25% of the CPU.

Do you get the same on gnome-shell or compiz? that might be a video driver issue.

Hi Didier,

Thanks for responding; I have a couple of queries about the importance of this bug.

Firstly, it also affects my ATI Radeon HD 4250 Graphics, implying that the scope is far wider than a single piece of hardware.

As a result, it seems to me that, as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance , the impact of this bug (which makes the entire graphical interface unusable) is probably closer to "Medium".

What do you think?

Hey Martin,

the thing is that ATI card are known to not working well and is not supported for unity in maverick (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopExperienceTeam/UnityHardwareRequirements).

However, we will fix it in Natty switching to compiz instead of mutter to ensure that ATI card owner has a fantastic and smooth experience of unity :)

Same was here on an HD4225 on Acer Aspire One 521 with fglrx driver.
Before some Update the menus and some popup windows were totaly destroyed. Afterwards Unity didn't start at all. No Panel, no Mutter window manager. So only the desktop.
I put gnome-terminal into autostart apps, so I at least had that running (as the only UI). I could start Metacity from terminal, so the terminal got a window frame. I could not start unity nor mutter. "Segmentation fault" was the only reaction in terminal I got.

I can add a "Me too". This is on Asus 1201T. As mentioned above, only a problem when fglrx module. The open radeon module doesn't have this problem.

Problem is only on unity. Compiz works great on the regular desktop with "Extra" visual effects.

Would be willing to help debug this as needed. I'll attach the Xorg log in case that helps.

I'm affected by this as well and will the Compiz port of Unity be available by the Alpha 1 target of Dec 2nd?

I am also affected by the slow bug with an ATI HD5500 card in Meerkat when installing gnome-shell.

Today I installed Natty and enabled the Ati driver and now when I reboot the desktop background loads but nothing else. The computer is unusable.

Hitting Ctrl-Alt-F12 kills the desktop but no command prompt shows and I am unable to move to an alternative login prompt to cleanly shutdown.

@Reptile, try Ctrl-Alt-T for a terminal, to see whether compiz is running.

My solution:

System Preferences -> Additional Drivers -> Disable ATI/AMD propietery FGLRX graphics driver

Now, Additional Drivers reports: No proprietary drivers are in use on this system.

Unity and Gnome3 windows now draw consistently without slant. 3D game OpenArena and Sketchup under Wine both work as well. If I do need to activate the propietary ATI/AMD dirvers for any reason, I will post back here.
