Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird

The welcome page/tab "Welcome to Thunderbird 3" is shown on the first start after every package update, e.g. from 3.1.1 to 3.1.2. I do not know whether this is the intention of the mozilla developers, but I consider it a bug since it provides nothing new and tends to get on the users' nerves.

Happens on TB 3.0/Lucid as well as TB 3.1/Karmic. Profiles are *not* migrated from TB2.

Will happily provide more info if needed.

Thanks for taking the time to report this. I use thunderbird multiple times a day. The event you are experiencing is in fact the way it is supposed to be operating. I agree that it is a little aggravating at times. I am going to see if we can mark this item as "wishlist" and hopefully get it the default behavior changed. Before we do that though please run the following command in a terminal to upload more info about your system.

apport-collect 666629

Thanks!

Thunderbird in Lucid should migrate a 2.0 profile. Thunderbird in Maverick and later doesn't since there is no upgrade path from a supported 2.0 version.

The welcome page is bug Bug #643736, so we can use this to address the profile migration issue.

We need to know which version of Thunderbird you are using, so please post the output of:
apt-cache policy thunderbird

@Micah
Maybe I was a bit unclear. I meant to say that I did not migrate any profiles, but created fresh ones instead. That's because I never had success in migrating TB2 profiles to Lucid until now, neither from Hardy nor from Karmic. And since I'm a sysadmin, I had tried that with ~20 different profiles and finally gave up, but that's another story which needs not be discussed here.

Since the welcome page thing is already followed upstream in 643736, we can close this here as duplicate. I just didn't find it before.

@RedSingularity
Do we still need apport information? For all machines I have at hand, or just for one or two?
