Implementing user listing is possible via GtkIconView by default (git).

Does this mean that the user list preference in /etc/xdg/lubuntu/lxdm/lxdm.conf gets ignored because of this bug? If not,I'll create a new bug for that.

@papukaija yes, the user list is supported, but the theme actually doesn't display it.

What is the real configuration file? Is it /etc/lxdm/lxdm.conf or /etc/xdg/lubuntu/lxdm/lxdm.conf? Or does one has preference over the other?

I see that the first has 'Industrial' as theme and the other has 'Lubuntu'. Would this user list work if I would change 'Lubuntu' to another theme (but then, what theme... Industrial?)

Industrial is the default theme and remains as part of the LXDM file / folder structure, and it's here because of its port from GDM. But the theme used is, of course, Lubuntu. You can add as many as you want.

You can read this if you want information on how to change or add themes to your system: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/man1/lxdm.1.html

I changed some things in /etc/xdg/lubuntu/lxdm/lxdm.conf, to have a user list:

theme=Industrial # used to be Lubuntu, needed to be changed because Lubuntu theme doesn't support user list
[userlist]
disable=0 # used to be 1

But it didn't had the desired effect: now I see three users: syslog, ntp and usbmux. I can click on 'more', but this doesn't give a list, but a text box, where I manually have to type in my login name.

Desired effect: a user list, with only the users who are people (eg. myself, my wife, kids, ...).

Workaround, blacklist syslog, ntp and usbmux:

black=syslog ntp usbmux # used to be empty

I think it's strange that only syslog, ntp and usbmux show up and no other not-person-users.

What is the purpose of white in the lxdm.conf, if you already have black?

It doesn't work, because it's not enabled by default. You need to modify the source and re-compile. The options are inside the code, it's annoying. But it's set like that for compatibility. So, we cannot access the user list for the moment. And as I suppose we're going to switch to LightDM, so this feature will be never implemented. But I insist, this is all supposed.

The .conf is right now only useful for theming.

We long since stopped using lxdm, so invalidating.
