Bug Description

Hello,

I bought one or two years ago this board, with an MPEG2 encoder. The cx88 driver creates three devices :

/dev/video0 : I don't remember if it's useful, I discarded it when I learned how to use these devices

/dev/video1 : this is the normal, not-MPEG processed TV device

/dev/video2 : this one gives access to the MPEG decoder

in order to enjoy a high TV quality, I enjoy looking the TV using /dev/video2; for that I use generally :

mplayer -vc mpeg12 -nocache /dev/video2

but

mplayer /dev/video2

or

vlc /dev/video2

work correctly as well.

However, there is one problem : after each boot, connecting to /dev/video2 with whatever command opens a blank window; I have to first connect to /dev/video1, I use for that :

xawtv -c /dev/video1

here I get a normal TV window; then I close it. Now, and now only, can I connect on /dev/video2 and get the MPEG-decoded TV image.

I have been having this bug across many kernel updates, I have waited at least one year. Other bugs have been repaired invovling this driver (such as boot stops) but not this one, so I eventually post this bug report.

It looks like a bug in the cx88 driver ?

Whay can we do ?

Best regards
R. Grasso

Hi boblinux,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 665505

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
