I think I know what the problem is. I chose the minimu space required for ubuntu to intall since I was just trying it out. I also marked the 'download extra mp3' packages. I think this caused the intaller to go out of disk space. This is only a guess, but I say this because un-checking the download extra packages let the installation complete without crashing.
