Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

The current lucid version of empathy, listed by ubuntu as 2.30.0, automatically and without warning logs all chats. There is not option to disable the logging. This is a significant privacy and security problem.

I believe that in the current maverick version of empathy there is an option to disable logging. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy The version of empathy apparently included in gnome release 2.32 included the disable logging option. I am afraid I cannot tell which empathy version introduced the disable logging option.

thank you for your bug report but if you want to use GNOME 2.32 you should upgrade to maverick, stable version only get selected bugfix updates

Thanks Sebastien, but I don't particularly want to use Gnome 2.32. I would simply like a version of empathy without the huge privacy/security hole in it. Auto-logging every chat, combined with the fact that the logs are in a hidden folder, seems like a bug to me. It probably seemed like a bug to the empathy folks, too, since they fixed it.

I don't wish to argue, but not fixing a serious privacy/security hole in an LTS version, when a fix is released and available, doesn't seem in the spirit of LTS releases.

Ubuntu just pushed 2.30.3 as an upgrade. Why can't we get the Maverick version? The one without a privacy/security hole? Lucid is supposed to be an LTS release. I don't think the idea is to force users of an LTS release to use defective software longer than everyone else.
