Does appending the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
and rebooting resolve the symptom?

options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1

I think the sound used to work after first installation of Lucid 10.04, but stopped after one of the upgrades through Update Manager. On a separate hard drive, I run Windows 7 and the sound works perfectly ... so I know it is not a hardware problem.
