Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.17

I installed Edgy Eft Beta on my tower which uses a wireless card that is reported as "RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI" (lspci). The kernel module is loaded and provides interfaces wlan0 and wmaster 0. But it doesn't work - I never get a connection to my AP (I tried with and without encryption). "iwlist wlan0 scanning" fails without result.

So far this bug is a duplicate of bug #58117.

I then tried different versions of configuration (using /etc/Wireless/RT61STA/rt61sta.dat and combinations of iwconfig/iwpriv) but nothing works. I also downloaded and installed the legacy rt61 driver from serialmonkey.com but it also fails. Then I tried the original driver from RaLink configured using this rt61sta.dat file: it works including WPA.

I suggest to replace the driver rt61pci with rt61 from RaLink for Edgy Eft.

After rebooting my machine several times I do not get the WPA connection anymore to my AP. The RaLink driver seems to be no better solution (but it worked in Dapper). So this bug report is nothing new and you should mark it as a simple duplicate of bug #58117.

After getting the network connection running once more (via RaLink driver rt61 configured using the /etc/Wireless&/RT61STA/rt61sta.dat file using WPAPSK) I upgraded the system from the net.

The provided rt61pci driver is still not working. I triedd again the RaLink driver and it seems to work a little bit better than before - I got a WPA network connection with the first try.

I then enabled the "auto ra0" line in /etc/network/interfaces and rebooted my machine. This doens't work; same problem as with Dapper (sometimes boot fails, sometimes the network connection is not working).

At least it could be a suggestion to provide all different kernel modules (rt61.ko from RaLing and serialmonkey.com and rt61pci from serialmokey.com) on the installation CDs which allows a advanced user to select the solution that best fits his machine.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached its end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
