sluggish response 10.10

I have recently (less than a week) upgraded to ubuntu 10.10 and i am getting sluggish response in all the applications that i use especially patience, movie player etc. suggest remedy.

I have used two applications frequently since the update.
(a) Kpatience- in this app the mov of the cards has slowed tremendously. the cards especially when shifting a stack of cars from one to another, the stack moves one card at the time. similarly when a game has been solved, the cards move slowly.
(b) movie player- while opening a movie file in avi, divx format etc the sys virtually comes to a standstill incl the mouse cursor. i noticed that if i press the spacebar the sys responds abruptly. the movie itself is played virually one frame at a time.

Hi thanks 4 ur response. firstly the problem affects all applications irrespective. applications seem to hang midway and stop responding. they can be made to respond by pressing any key. i had recd a mail from delance and i reproduce it. he has identified the problemb but had not suggested any remidies and i quote "delance posted a new comment:
>There's a bug in which you have to continuously press on keyboard to make software run. Is it your issue ?

Happens in kpatience and mplayer, so it is probably not kdegames specific.

What does gnome-system-monitor say about cpu use? Is it around 100% all the time?

same bug is irritating me also. everything was fine with lucid lynx but now.. everything is almost a mess with maverick. from the time i start my laptop.. each & every application (actually the whole system) starts to becoming unstable & very very sluggish. sometimes u cannot move the cursor for few minutes & sometimes it seems like the system has hanged! it recovers itself automatically for a few minutes, after few minutes! i cannot play (as it should do without continuous skipping) a song or video in totem or vlc. almost times downloads are stopped automatically & when u just move the cursor around... it again resumes but only for the time till ur moving the cursor or pressing any key!!!
