Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird

After the upgrade from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 Thunderbird starts Konqueror instead of Firefox when I click to a link in an email. I can't find any solution to force starting firefox instead of konqueror.

In the Gnome Settings (System --> Preferred Applications) is Firefox selected as default browser.

Update: links with "http://" are started in firefox, but links with SSL encrypted http ("https://") are started in konqueror

I see the same problem, also for http.
I am using Kubuntu 10.10.
Firefox is also set as the default browser in System Settings.

Same problem, for http and https, after upgrade from kubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. Firefox is default browser in System settings and also in thunderbird in network.protocol-handler.app.http and network.protocol-handler.app.https. I don't know how to fix it.

Update : this can be corrected with the command :
sudo update-alternatives --verbose --config x-www-browser

and choose firefox

"sudo update-alternatives --verbose --config x-www-browser" was not enough for me (it was set to epiphany)

I had to go to preferences->preferred applications and change the Internet/Webbrowser from "Custom" to "firefox"

These were changed by the upgrade to 10.10.

That's a bug

Still that as not necessary before.

That fixed the problem for me as well, but I still consider it as a bug.

I had a similar problem.
Thunderbird (3) has options to set the application to use to open links. I had this set to the correct Firefox installed when I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. It did not work: links (http or https) would not open.
IMO the bug is that there is more than one place to set the functionality for opening links: in this case, one place is in TB, and the other is via System>Settings>Preferred Applications.
In my case, at some distant time in the past I had set the Web Browser (and mail, too) to open a Custom path
(to an older firefox which I wouldn't expect to work under 10.04).
I think the correct solution would require a Gnome variant of TB to strip the ignored and deceptive configuration choice from TB, to be installed as the Ubuntu version. Either that, or only use the system preference as a fallback to application-specific preferences.

Hello Markusd,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird.

You made this bug report in 2010 and there have been several versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
Or, if it is still a problem, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 663100

and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.
