Bug Description

In a new, updated, edgy install a movie playing a video with xine-ui provides flawless video however the sound is not synced (lags).

If played in gxine the video flickers every few seconds. When I attempted to watch a full movie the program froze after about 1/2 hour of playback. I've filed this separately, but thought it might be useful for debugging.

this is most probably a bug in xine-lib. Can you please provide a demo file so that we can examine which demuxer plugin we are actually talking about?

I'm not sure what you mean by a demo file. Can you tell me how to go
about generating one?

I have enough files which don't show this bug. We need a file which does.

I notice the problem with "James and the Giant Peach," "Shrek," "The
Polar Express," and "The Lord of the Rings -- The Two Towers." These
are only the first four disks that I've tried. I expect that I would
have the same trouble with every DVD I put in.

I wouldn't expect you to be able to reproduce it. Is there another way
we can go about troubleshooting? I'm not sure where to begin.

Thanks.

Ah, you didn't say about playing DVDs before. I just tried to reproduce it with my LOTR Two towers dvd, but I cannot see any a/v desyncs.

What audio output do you use? Do you perhaps use the arts or esd output plugin? If yes, try the alsa one.

Tried alsa. Audio still lags.

I also have another problem(s) which is/are perhaps related. I thought I'd mention them here before I filed another bug just in case they are.

The system hibernated last night with a dvd paused at the main menu. When I woke the system up this morning I found that xine was frozen. I have this same problem with rhythmbox (see https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/65939 --Can I use html here?)

Could this be an issue with the underlying audio drivers as opposed to the individual packages? If so, which package should the bug be filed with?

I don't think this is very unlikely. Since it seems to happen with every
file on every media player, I'd say it is very likely

against the Kernel, e.g. linux-source-2.6.17

I put in a movie today with my sons account and noticed that some how it auto launched with totem (using totem %m in removable media). I then noticed that I couldn't detect any video lag. I tried another disk (Two Towers) and again I couldn't notice any problems with sync.

Then playing with xine-ui using `xine -f dvd://1` the audio most definately lags behind video.

I don't have gxine installed on this system so I haven't tried to see if its common to xine-lib based programs.

This definately started to happen to xine-ui. I noticed it on a gentoo box
with a newer version of xine at first, but blamed it on a faulty external
audio receiver.

I updated my other htpc to Edgy, and then noticed it happens in xine there
too.

This seem to be a bug in xinelib 1.1.2 when playing DVD's (only?).

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=30795777&forum_id=3438

I have tried compiling xinelib 1.1.1 in edgy and that did solve the problem. However I got other issues, probably due to build errors.

Is it possible to distribute 1.1.1 as an update to 1.1.2 in edgy until this is solved upstream?

Thanks/Nicklas

This happens with both totem-xine, xine-ui, and kaffeine for me on DVD playback. It can be corrected by manually setting the digital AV sync in xine-ui, but still thats not a fix.

Downgrading to an older xine-lib fixes the problems, and they dont just sit in xine-ui.
