Bug Description

Bug 629005 was fixed by having both mysql-cluster and mysql-5.1 provide libmysqlclient16 and having a conflict between them.

According to comments 8 to 11 there it sounds like a better deal to make mysql-cluster depend on mysql-5.1's libmysqlclient16.

What can I do to help get this fixed in Lucid since it is LTS.

The conflict/provides doesn't solve the entire problem. Lots of packages depend on specific versions of libmysqlclient16, eg nagios-plugins-standard. (Although this is the natty version it was just as broken in lucid):
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.8), libldap-2.4-2 (>= 2.4.7), libmysqlclient16 (>= 5.1.21-1), libpq5 (>= 8.4~0cvs20090328), libradius1, zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4), snmp, radiusclient1, libnet-snmp-perl, dnsutils, bind9-host | host, smbclient, ucf, nagios-plugins-basic (>= 1.4.5-2)

Raising this to High. So many install problems come from the extra client packages that are shipped... which are totally unnecessary.

mysql-cluster-7.0 was removed from precise, so this can't be fixed.

Yeah... if you ignore a problem for long enough, it goes away.

um... but lucid is still in LTS, and this problem is still present there. It doesn't particularly matter to me whether this bug exists in precise, especially since if there is no mysql-cluster package in precise, I won't be deploying precise for this application.

What is the appropriate way for me to seek support for this issue in lucid?

Understood Steve, and I'm sorry that we haven't been able to help you with this.

Because mysql-cluster-7.0 is in universe in lucid, the Ubuntu project's support for it is minimal. If the community has a fix, we'll certainly put it through the normal stable update process, but we aren't actively seeking to make sure all bugs are fixed.

Note that there is some interest in packaging Cluster 7.2 for Debian:

Steve Ayre might be interested in helping with packages for Ubuntu as well, and their Debian packages might even work for precise.
