Bug Description

Kubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) Live-CD i386 Dektop does not boot on my system, boot results in screen garbage and freeze.
Only way to boot is with "F6" -> boot option "nomodeset".
I have an EVGA GT240 512 MB GDR5 Nvidia-Graphics Card, the reason for the boot-fail must be the nouveau-driver.

Sorry, cant provide a Caspar Debug Log - System simple freezes, even with the debug option, so now chance to get to a konsole, no Alt+F1 or anything. I could provide you with an camera screen shot, if that helps.
Heres a description of what happens with a normal boot before the system freezes:
- splash screen comes up, Kubuntu text is visible, and animated dots are visible.
- system tries to switch to kwin for their boot splash screen -> screen garbage and system freezes.

Same thing happened here with Ubuntu Maverick final Desktop Live CD; when trying to boot, Plymouth runs perfectly (detects resolutions correctly), but when it tries to start the regular desktop, it freezes. Screen shows garbage (mostly what's left on video memory, sometimes I even recognize something from my last Lucid session), but VT switching works.

Switched to VT1 and tried to collect as much log data as possible. Problem seems, obviously, to be Nouveau. Attached you'll find to Xorg logs I found and a `dmesg | grep -i nouv` output showing some problems.

My video card is a GDDR5 nVidia GT 240 (512mb). Will try to install with alternate CD and hope that nVidia's blob works fine (as it does right now with Lucid) -- but I really wanted to test out Nouveau (anyway, I can't live without VDPAU so I would have ended up using the proprietary blob anyway).

Hope this helps,

nachokb

Has anyone checked their Live CD for errors? Either chose the menu option from the Live CD to check disk for errors or perform a md5sum check on the CD and compared to the hash here, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes.

BTW most probably Nouveau does not yet support GT240 [1]. In that case, the problem is that the LiveCD tries to use it and hangs.

I have tested my Live-CD for errors, there are none. Unfortunately i cant even get an Console with Alt+F1 like nachokb when my System freezes (maybe with Ubuntu 11.10 - if Xorg doesnot run as root ... :-) )
And for the record, 10.04 booted fine one my system, and i think they used nouveau as well. If so, there must be some regression in xorg-nouveau, cause Plymouth works fine.

From the behavior this is similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/654654
With the difference that i only have one monitor and a GT240.

Sadly the same happens with Live CD NattyNarwhal - Alpha3 - Kubuntu. But this time i was able to get some logs, booting with Linux Mint 10 KDE Live CD, and it shows a "GPU lockup - switching to software fbcon".
Clever thing, Linux Mint has a xorg failsafe for the boot.
