Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Not every time and perhaps not most of the time, but often enough when I put the computer in suspend mode, it apparently makes X crash. When I wake up the computer from suspend, my session is gone and and replaced by the gdm login screen.

Not sure how relevant it is but the reason I am running this version of the Linux kernel is that I hope it contains a fix for the frustrating bug 542731.

Hi Timo,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command in a terminal after reproducing the issue, and it it will automatically gather debugging information needed for this bug:

  apport-collect 659405

Are you able to reproduce this issue easily? If so, please collect a full backtrace - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions. If not, could you describe the conditions under which the crash tends to occur?

Bryce, I tried to collect a backtrace last night with no success. I will try again when I find the time. And I will do an apport-collect whenever X crashes.

The crash is not really related to anything in particular as far as I can see. It seems to make no difference what applications are running for example. Just that every once in a while when I wake up the machine from suspend my session is no longer there.

One thing I noticed while playing around with gdb was that if I suspend from the virtual terminal command line instead of from the desktop menu, X does not seem to crash. However, the crashes are generally so random that I cannot tell if this was just a random occurrence too.

I am now able to reproduce the bug. X seems to crash every time after the first suspend after starting the system. After that, the crashes no longer happen.

Although I have been able to reproduce the bug, so far I have failed to get a backtrace. Gdb just reports "No stack." I did however do an apport-collect.

Well, can you provide your Xorg.0.log and/or Xorg.0.log.old that includes a backtrace? Or look in /var/log/gdm/ for any files with backtraces or terminal error messages.

I'm not able to reproduce this issue on my own systems, so unfortunately without either a backtrace or terminal error message, the developers will not be able to do anything about this issue.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

Timo Laine, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I'm running Xubuntu 12.04 on an AVELL notebook model G1711 (avell dot com dot br)
I did not install NVidia Driver, running only intel's integrated video interface (i5 Haswell).
However, when it suspends due to inactivity timeout or if I ask it to enter in suspension (not hibernation) i freezes out.
The only way to use the machine again is by pressing on/off button up to shutting the machine off, and then restarting it again.
I upgraded to KERNEL 3.12-SAUCY, have Oracle Java JDK 7 and Oracle VirtualBox installed.
Initailly it presented "...done" in upper left corner and nothing more.
Once it said also in upper left corner something like Loading Virtualbox kernel blablabla [ok] and froze up.
I tried many distributions and the HW list bellow was produced under openSuse 13.1.
However my curent Kernel is :
3.12.0-031200-generic #201311031935 SMP Mon Nov 4 00:36:54 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
