Bug Description

the directory /usr/share/snmp/mibs is missing from the libsnmp-base package on maverick

according to /usr/share/doc/libsnmp-base/README.mibs these are now fetched and built and there's meant to be a Makefile.mib to help, but this file does not appear to be present.

Reading the NEWS file:

net-snmp (5.4.2.1~dfsg-4) unstable; urgency=low

  As of version 5.4.2.1~dfsg-4, this package no longer downloads the MIBs
  from IETF or IANA, but suggests the package snmp-mibs-downloader in
  contrib to do this job. Please consider installing this package if you
  need the SNMP MIBs.

So it appears you should install the snmp-mibs-downloader package and use /usr/bin/download-mibs

The net-snmp without MIBs is useless for a lot o people, please reconsider.

This is probably due to licensing reasons, auto-downloading MIBs from IETF or IANA is certainly considered "distributing" them. That's why Debian separated the MIB downloader and required user action to install them. I don't think Ubuntu would like to differ there... but I could be proven wrong.

It would be informative useful if the absence, and the method to fetch the MIBS was made clearer.

There are libraries and applications that look for the mibs in /usr/share/snmp/mibs

"download-mibs" is not creating them there.

It uses a "new" one

/var/lib/mibs

with subdirectories "iana" and "ietf"

Breaking the location has nothing to do with licensing.

It would be nice if net-snmp created /usr/share/snmp/mibs with a README file forwarding us to download-mibs and a bit of info about the change.

The above behaviour persists up to precise. I can see that the mibdirs include the locations where download-mibs puts them:

root@precise:~# net-snmp-config --default-mibdirs
/root/.snmp/mibs:/usr/share/mibs/site:/usr/share/snmp/mibs:/usr/share/mibs/iana:/usr/share/mibs/ietf:/usr/share/mibs/netsnmp

root@precise:~# ls -l /usr/share/mibs
total 12
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Jun 7 2010 iana -> /var/lib/mibs/iana
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Jun 7 2010 ietf -> /var/lib/mibs/ietf
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 May 23 23:12 netsnmp

IE, the location is not "broken", as Net-SNMP will follow the mibdirs variable.

This should be closed as Not a Bug.
