I saw the same thing straight after upgrading from 10.04. However, after some time, 10 minutes or so, it seems to have slowed down. I think it may have been doing some indexing task.

Yesterday after the upgrade thunderbird was opened for like 4-5 hours, and it wasnt slowed down, however today after around 2 hours (Was going to eat breakfast and lunch), it was slowed down indeed as well. Still sounds that it uses high load for a pretty long time.

Thunderbird started rushing again as soon as I selected a local folder containing some 4500 saved messages.

I agree, the same bug of Thunderbird slowing down affected me too right after upgrading from Lucid to Ubuntu Meerkat 10.10, it causes my system to freeze intermittently and hogs a lot of CPU.

I disabled most addons and still found the bug to persist.

Its become so annoying that I am considering moving from Thunderbird to Evolution, I really hope someone fixes this soon.

Same here, after the update via the web to 10.10, Thunderbird is taking about 50% of CPU. I've disabled extensions and removed/ reinstalled Thunderbird... Can I revert to the previous version?

Well, I have reverted to tbird 2.0.0.24, available on the tbird website, after some searching. (A 3.0 version was also available, but that kept crashing...) This is a little disappointing, however, for a new version of Ubuntu and I hope it will be fixed soon.
(Reversion is simple enough: sudo rm -rf /usr/bin/thunderbird to remove the programme, but not the mail and settings; then download, untar and move the older version to wherever you want, /usr/bin being the normal place. Mail and settings should be in a folder called .thunderbird and .mozilla-thunderbird - a link - in your home folder. The "new" thunderbird ought to find them automatically.)

Last update: downloading tbird 3.1.4 for linux from the mozilla tbird site rather than from the ubuntu depositories seems to have solved the cpu issue.

Of course, anybody who follows the advice in comment 7 is completely on their own, and we take absolutely no responsibility for anything bad that might happen.

Does this issue stop if you turn off the indexer in the preferences?

Graham Ranger (graham-ranger) wrote :

No, my Thunderbird overconsumed CPU, even when the indexer was turned off, the folders compacted and extensions removed. The bug appears to be tied to the ubuntu-specific version of tbird.
Point taken, for comment #7... it works for me, in any case.

Further update: a fresh install of Thunderbird via Synaptics seems to have sorted things out. CPU is now normal.

I've just upgraded 12 Ubuntu workstations and got thid problem with two of that.

Neither unchecking indexing nor starting thunderbird with and empty profile solved the issue, i had to install thunderbird from the mozilla ppa:

add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa
aptitude install thunderbird

This almost solved the issue: Now my users can get to work, but still too slow; not suitable for a desktop enviroment.

same here.
10.10 Fresh install,
THunderbird profile restored from a 9.04
and havy load from thunderbird 2 or 3 minutes after strating it
I also notice that Tbird uses a huge amount of memoyr, causing the system to swap
