menu items are highlighted when not pressing alt key

The menu items are all shown with lines under them as if I am pressing alt, even though I am not. I am on Ubuntu 10.10.

Yes that is exactly the issue. Also, I noticed that the issue is present on the VirtualBox main screen as well. All of the rest of my applications do not do this. I also cannot actually use the alt shortcuts unless I am pressing alt, but they are always underlined.

That is actually the correct behavior for this version of firefox. If you would like I can direct you to the site to suggest a change in this behavior to the developers.
