Bug Description

Upon boot. I get an error that prevents the kernel from recognizing the external monitor through DVI-D connection:
DRM: Invalid EDID checksum, remainder is 130.

Only VGA mode works fine.

The monitor is : DELL ST2310 and it is fully recognized in Windows (Xp, Vista and 7) through DVI-D, HDMI and VGA.

I tested with OpenSUSE, Fedora 13, Knoppix, Mandriva. Same problem! Invalid EDID.

I guess it is a bug in the Linux Kernel (DRM) and has something to do with Intel Graphics driver.

I have an INTEL GMX945 Graphics integrated card with VGA and DVI-D ports.

Using : Ubuntu 10.10.

If you need me to apply several tests! Please feel free to ask!

Hi mediterran81,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I followed the advise above to install upstream kernels. I tried two (cause I was not sure which one would be the best):

linux-image-2.6.36-020636rc8-generic_2.6.36-020636rc8.201010150908_amd64.deb: both laptop and external screen completely blank. The system did boot it seemed, based on harddisk activity i hear.

linux-image-2.6.36-997-generic_2.6.36-997.201010090908_amd64.deb: latop booted, initially some screen flickering, but then progressed normally. But the problem of the external display is not solved.

This is my xrandr output:

It seems that the VGA connections does not work properly either. Maybe this is a separate problem, maybe not? When trying to attach a 1600x1200 Samsung SyncMaster 204Ts i get:

Oct 25 09:15:48 legato kernel: [ 179.148134] i915 0000:00:02.0: VGA-1: EDID block 0 invalid.

I can only choose from some low resolutions, not the 1600x1200.

When connecting this panel to the DisplayPort (trough the DP to dual-link DVI adapter), i get again:

Oct 25 09:28:11 legato kernel: [ 920.293647] i915 0000:00:02.0: DisplayPort-2: EDID block 2 invalid.

So not exactly the same message about an invalid checksum that I get when I connect the 2560x1600 panel, but I assume related to the same bug.

Just wondering whether there are any new insights? I've tried several upstream kernels, but had no success.

What is the status of this bug report? Still incomplete???? What should we do to make it complete!

Tried again with a SMASUNG XL2370 SyncMaster, and the problem remains. EDID error.

Tried with actual kernel and mainstream kernels! Same problem!
Used DVI connection, HDMI connection. same problem!

Only VGA works!

Both External monitors work fine under Windows XP, Vista and Seven.

It is all clear, that is the Intel GM graphic card driver which does not support Digital output to external Devices (Monitors).
Frustrating!

mediterran81, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a supported release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
