I believe I found a temporary fix. I installed initramfs-tools from http://ftp.debian.org/pool/main/i/initramfs-tools/ and this corrected the problems I was having.

clean up your costum image:

sudo rm /var/lib/initramfs-tools/2.6.32.8-custom

Don't compile linux images if you don't know what your doing. ;)
