Bug Description

Maverick introduced the X server version 1.9, up from Lucid's 1.8 branch. Either way, users have to use Nvidia's version 173 (or 96) driver if they have a pre-GeForce-6 card, such as the FX 5 series. However, as Nvidia hasn't updated the 173 or 96 driver branches to work with X server 1.9 (the current branch has), the driver doesn't work at all, and X won't start.

Could you try the newer drivers also and report if they work? Thanks...

This bug is specific to pre-GeForce-6 cards. Please note that the nvidia-current driver branch (currently at 260.19.06) are not compatible with these older cards at all, so the older, version 173 branch must be used. The problem here is that this older driver is incompatible with Xorg 1.9, which is introduced in maverick.
