Bug Description

Because GNOME 2.12 isn't in Debian unstable yet, java-gnome has been held back in debian. However, there has been quite a bit of progress on java-gnome since then. Thus, java-gnome should be updated in (particularly) dapper and (possibly) breezy-backports. Some reference packages can be found here: http://www.natemccallum.com/uploads/debs/ and some other (non-packaged) possible packages for inclusion could be java-dbus, libgtkhtml-java, libvte-java, and libgtkmozembed-java.

At this moment java-gnome packages can't be fully installed in Edgy.
Also some available packages have released new versions.

This libraries:
libglib-java, libcairo-java, libgtk-java, libgconf-java are installable, and are up to date.

libgnome-java can't be installed, has an old version.
  - libgnome-java depends on libgnome-jni
    - libgnome-jni can't be installed because it depends on libgcj7 (which is wrong)
      - libgcj7 does not exist. Was renamed to libgcj7-0
  - Last released version is 2.12.5, current available version in repos is 2.12.3

libglade-java can't be installed, has an old version.
  - libglade-java depends on libgnome-java, which can't be installed.
  - Last released version is 2.12.6, current available version in repos is 2.12.4

libvte-java is not available in repos.
  - Last released version is 0.12.1

libgtkmozembed-java is not available in repos.
  - Last released version is 1.7.0

libdbus-java (not part of Java Gnome) is not available in repos.
  - Last released version is 1.9.
  - Only compatible with Java 5, an old version compatible with Java 1.4

JNI packages should not depend on any component of GCJ, but on java-virtual-machine (and maybe Java2-runtime) which is provided by GNU GIJ, Blackdown J2RE 1.4 and Sun Java 5. With any of this packages, the JNI packages will work.

Java packages should also depend on java-virtual-machine and java-runtime.

Yes, there is still a problem. In Gutsy there is no package called "java-gnome". Are there any replacements for it?

Well, I only want to use DBus within Java and I need the package dbus-java for that. But dbus-java only exists in Debian releases (lenny and sid). I couldn't find it in any Ubuntu releases. But why? Why do I have to download such packages from packages.debian.org? I always thought, all debian packages would also be in the ubuntu repository.

This bug report is a little bit out of date. Is it better to create a new bug report, something like "dbus-java missing in Gutsy and Hardy"?

I don't know why the build fails, but I'm wondering why Ubuntu is still trying to build the old version 1.12-1 of libdbus-java, but in Debian you can find version 2.x since the beginning of 2007:

Seems it was renamed to dbus-java. I asked for a sync and removal of libdbus-java. However this is out of scope of this bug report.

Is this still a problem in Intrepid or Jaunty (with dbus-java)?

Intrepid does not have any package called dbus-java or something similar.

In Jaunty there are the packages "dbus-java-bin" and libdbus-java. I haven't tested them, because I'm not working dbus anymore. But I suppose they are OK and this issue can be closed, since there is no one going to backport this package to gutsy, hardy, or intrepid.

Thank you for the feedback, based on your comment I will close this bug as it no longer seems applicable to current versions of Ubuntu.
