Also affects me.

Note that the problematic frame in Lightning Jims and mine error log coincide:

Jim:
# Problematic frame:
# C [r300_dri.so+0x495ad] radeonEmitVec4+0x3d

mine:
# Problematic frame:
# C [r300_dri.so+0x56afc] radeonEmitVec4+0x4c

Could it be an issue of the kernels radeon drivers?

I'm also having a similar problem. Minecraft has been crashing on me a lot. It is always as I'm mining. The instant a block is supposed to disappear, the game crashes. Not every time I mine, but every time it crashes it's at that instant.

Also occurs in recent update MineCraft beta 1.2_02. If it matters, I too have a radeon graphics card. ATI HD Radeon 4870 x2.

Adding more information after installing open-jdk6-debug and catching it with valgrind. Compressed attachment contains terminal.txt, the valgrind log, and the java dump. Please fix! :D

I believe this is a problem with the open-source ATI drivers. As a workaround the proprietary ones support the necessary shaders (some of which are unsupported and are the reason for crashing the game).

Is everyone affected by this bug running Lucid? If so, have you tried playing on Maverick with the same card? If on Maverick, have any tried on Natty? There is a large possibility that the shader support might have landed in one of those releases.

I'm running Maverick, I'll have to try it on Natty whenever it gets out or I feel like trying a nightly.
Still affected with latest updates...

Note that the xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd package is obsolete. All radeon cards use the xserver-xorg-video-ati (radeon) driver for 2D, mesa for 3D and the kernel for modesetting in most cases. r300_dri.so is part of the mesa OpenGL libraries.
