Bug Description

Hi,

I've just upgraded a regular ubuntu notebook to maverick RC1, and installed kubuntu-netbook just to give it a try. I experienced two problems, which might both be related to incomplete dependencies

a) I got a regular (or what I believe was regular) KDE desktop, not a netbook desktop. There should be different gdm session entry, like gnome and gnome netbook. Maybe the session descriptor file is missing?

b) when starting kde there was a lot of widgets and taskbar symbols with red error messages, telling that something couldn't be found. Looks like missing dependencies.

regards

You can switch between Desktop and Netbook in System Settings -> Workspace.

What error messages do the widgets display?

The package contains all those widgets.

Have you had them on your desktop before the upgrade?

No.

I just upgraded my machine to 10.10 beta and then installed the kubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-netbook packages to give them a try.

But I've set my system (synaptic) to not treat recommendations as dependencies, since too many ubuntu packages do recommend to many unnecessary or annoying packages.

plasma-widgets-addons is just in the recommendations list of kubuntu-desktop, so it was not pulled in automatically.

If it is such important that it causes plenty of error messages if missing then it should either be in the dependencies, or kubuntu should not open these widgets by default if absent.

The addons do not qualify as dependency. The functionality in a Plasma shell scope is taskmanagement etc. Which are covered by a dependency on plasma-widgets-workspace. Whether plasma-netbook should show them silly error widgets instead of just not initializing the missing widgets on first start is however arguable. If you feel it should not please report a bug at bugs.kde.org to address by the Plasma developers.
