Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.35-22-generic

In Maverick Release Candidate (in both Netbook and Desktop i386) I get a black bar on either side of the screen with resolutions other than default. Here is my video card info...

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 09)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)

This is on a Lenovo G530 laptop with a 2.0 ghz dual-core processor and 2 gigs of ram.

I believe this bug is related to the kernel because with older kernels (2.6.35-6 for example) I do not have this problem. I'm not running Maverick RC at present because the black bars on either side of the screen makes my laptop basically unusable at my preferred resolution (800x600). I have a screenshot of the situation which I'll attach. I hope it gets fixed before Mavericks release later this month. The current kernel version of Maverick RC is 2.6.35-22 at which I'm experiencing this problem.

Thanks for your time. You can contact me at my email address.

Hi bobbyjean58,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 654766

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Jeremy,
I tried the latest upstream kernels...
linux-image-2.6.35-02063506-generic_2.6.35-02063506.201009271105_i386.deb
linux-image-2.6.35-02063507-generic_2.6.35-02063507.201009290909_i386.deb
linux-image-2.6.36-020636rc1-generic_2.6.36-020636rc1.201008171306_i386.deb
and...
linux-image-2.6.36-020636rc7-generic_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_i386.deb

but all had the same result...black bars on either side of the screen. The kernel update that I took shortly after installation (2.6.35-22.34) did not solve my resolution problem either.

This is on a Maverick Final 32bit install.

I'm presently running an old Maverick kernel image...
linux-image-2.6.35-6-generic_2.6.35-6.9_i386.deb
which works perfectly...full screen resolution...no black bars.

If I can be of any further assistance then please contact me.

Thank you for your interest and efforts.
