Bug Description

DISTRIB_RELEASE=10.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=maverick
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu maverick (development branch)"
Thinkpad t43, radeon 9600 mobility with radeon driver

After update to maverick rc i cannot login to ubuntu-desktop, this cause a full freeze. The desktop appears solid colored without anything else, the pointer stills locked in the middle of the screen. The fan blows lot of heat, ctrl-alt-del, console keys and powerdown switch are ignored. The failsafe sessions runs well, i removed all start apps but the full desktop session crash every time at login.
Parallel installed netbook-remix run into blinking chess graphic trash with hot blowing fan but there i can reach the consoles to reset gdm.

Hi,
  Can you try adding the

nomodeset

option to the kernel boot line ? To do that hit shift to get the grub menu right after the bios and I think it's hit 'e' to edit the entry.
Now go to the kernel line that ends with quiet splash and edit the line and add nomodeset and then I think it is ctrl-k to boot.

No difference, full crash with full desktop, black-white blinking unity with parts of the last used desktop wallpaper. But the secured desktop is working already.

What do you mean by 'secured desktop'?
Do you have desktop effects enabled, if so it might be worth trying to disable them.

Moved to X server, seems most likely.

Can you run apport-collect 654385 from that system, it should pick up X logs etc.

affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) → xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)

In gdm i have a "ubuntu-desktop-edition (sicherheitsmodus)" and only this runs clean without services. Desktop effects are switched to "none".

Thanks for adding the info.

Have some further info bout the bug, i have the radeon rv350 m10 card that cause trouble in the past. But it worked well to 10.04 here, a full rollback will be the last way out.

Same bug appears in: #594493 #583885
I want to try the agmode tip, but no xorg.conf exist on the system now.

You can create an xorg.conf and it will use it, it just doesn't normally need it.

Now i understand the difference, the failsafe session use vesa with the xorg.conf.failssafe so the crash did not appear. Created the xorg.conf and use the agpmode 1 i can log into the desktop session, the crash comes a bit later. In full desktop the visual effects was on "normal" that cause the crash. With completely switched off desktop effects the system run stable.
Desktop effects, aka 3d mode like compiz crash the system and displays bogus with unity. The prior radeon driver from 10.04 was okay.

Checked unity netbook 10.10 on the thinkpad (radeon m10 9600). The unity desktop appears as solid backpic, but withput crash. When moving the mouse to panel solid white boxes without text appear. Things in the upper invisible panel can be triggered to show their menüs.
The switch symbol upper left, shows up the application icons and other symbols. Switches between correct view and plain backpic.

I think Unity uses quite a lot of 3d stuff - so both cases are 3d related. I'll leave this one for the ATI X guys to figure out.

You might like to try using the very latest experimental X packages at https://edge.launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
If they work any better please add a comment here.
