Strangely, this has shown up in the main archive through lucid-updates. I wasn't aware that you could introduce new packages this way. Perhaps there were some special Canonical powers in play? I guess we can close this.

Changed in lucid-backports:
status: New → Fix Released

Andrew: I've duped this against bug #650889 ("Ubuntu Font Family would be valuable for older releases") as it might be interesting to read the back story. The discussions did involve several Ubuntu archive administrators (not necessarily Canonical ones...) and certain other people with a strong interest to allow it to be exceptionally processed as a Stable Release Update! In this case;

  1. The Ubuntu Font Family is closely associated with the Ubuntu brand and users have proven extremely enthusiastic to get it
  2. Is a leaf-node package (does not depend on anything else); containing only data
  3. We really want people to running the latest version of the fonts (to help clean out early test versions)
  4. A package from the repository can be further updated; random .ttfs installed in ~/.fonts/ cannot
  5. A user has to intentionally choose to install the package themselves from the Ubuntu Software Centre (it is not automatic, or to be depended upon)

Good to know, and glad their available. Thanks for the info Paul. I certainly didn't mean to imply anything nefarious by the phrase "special Canonical powers."
