Bug Description

Binary package hint: gimp

This is the first time I report a bug, so bear with me if I don't do it right. Here goes:

The aforementioned windows display, but the actual lists of layers, channels, paths and undo history come up as blank/do not display.
Even if I add layers, they are added but they do not display in the window. The layers menu in the window comes up but all the options are greyed out/cannot be chosen. I have to go to Layer>New Layer... to add a new layer.
The windows themselves can be moved, closed, re-opened but the problem persists.

Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, GNOME 2.30.2, 2.6.8-2ubuntu1.1

I just downloaded the newest Gimp, 2.6.11 from subscribing to the repository ppa:ferramroberto/gimp. The problem persists still...

With today's update, all the lists (except the undo history list) appeared in their windows and worked. After I closed Gimp and reopened it, they stopped working/displaying again. *puzzled*
They haven't worked since then, no matter how many times I restart Gimp.

After another general update, the layers list seemed to work until I dropped an image file in Gimp to open it, at which point they vanished. So, I guess restarting it has not much to do with the list disappearing.

The update to Ubuntu 10.10 didn't solve the problem.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.

Hi,
I am sorry to say I haven't updated to the Natty Narwhal, due to reported performance glitches, and will not be updating to it in the foreseeable future, as this is my work machine.
I can only update on the problem so far, which is that it has somehow changed in nature over time.
I have been using GIMP in a Photoshop lookalike layout (see attached screenshot) and those windows won't work in this layout. But, for the past few months, as soon as I drag them out of it, they do work. When I drag them back to it, they go back to being greyed out. (I came across a tutorial in a blog online a long time ago on how to get GIMP to this layout, thus I can't point you to it now.)
I hope this helps somehow and sorry for not being able to be more helpful.
