Bug Description

Binary package hint: cheese

I think I may end up describing two different bugs altogether, but in this case they're interacting pretty closely. I'm on a netbook (Atom N450 Processor) using the Video4Linux 2 codec/whatever V4L2 is. Ubuntu 10.10.

Alright, so every time I start up Cheese, or exit the effects bin, or any similar situation, the video preview screen takes a long time to initialize. And I mean 10-15 seconds of black screen. Once it's going, though, it's fine, so I'm not sure why it takes so long to initialize the camera.

When I try to record video, the screen re-initializes and is pitch black for awhile. Finally, the video shows up - and then freezes. Whatever frame showed up when the initialization process finished is going to be stuck on the screen until I stop recording. And no matter how long I try to record, the saved file is trimmed to 6 seconds of a freeze frame, but it's not even the freeze frame from the recording preview, and the audio is from the part of the recording process when the screen was black. As far as I can tell, the freeze frame in the recording is an actual frame recorded while the viewer was starting up, but that's just a wild guess so don't quote me on that one.

I really don't need to record video of my face that badly, but this *is* a serious bug, so hopefully you guys will be able to fix it.
