I tried to uninstall an application using $sudo tasksel. I had unchecked the entry in tasksel and selected next, but it ended up removing all packages on the system. I was too late to notice it. So I used Ctrl+Alt+F1 to fall back to the shell and installed ubuntu-desktop, then I restarted GDM, logged in and ran sudo apt-get autoremove. It threw the error mentioned.
