Can you please try the latest kernel here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36-rc6-maverick/

If the problem still exists then use a xorg-edgers ppa for its drivers here:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

I didn't have the time or skill to manually upgrade the kernel. But, I just received an automatic kernel update. I'm now at 2.6.35-22-generic. I ran the update, restarted, plugged in the monitor, went to the monitor menu, and at that point it crashed before I even saw the window.

If it makes a difference, my current install started from Ubuntu beta 10.10 but has stayed current with updates and should now be full 10.10 I assume.

I just figured out how to install the new kernel

I'm now running 2.6.36-020636rc7-generic #201010070908 SMP Thu Oct 7 10:21:05 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

Computer no longer crashes with the external monitor, but, still unable to get 1440x900 resolution.

current xorg.conf is as follows
