Bug Description

Brand-new laptop, Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit, fan is always running, from cold start...

When trying to run 'fan-control' - I get "fan: laptop does not have cooling fan or kernel module not installed."

Some additional info:

/proc/acpi/fan is empty.

$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/trip_points
critical (S5): 105 C
passive: 95 C: tc1=2 tc2=3 tsp=100 devices=CPU0 CPU1 CPU2

$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/cooling_mode
<setting not supported>

$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/state
state: ok

$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/polling_frequency
<polling disabled>

k10temp.ko module installed manually, problem existed before and persists after module installation

I have tried fglrx for my ATI vid card and the open-source, don't think it is related as reported in bug #563156

Hello.
Thanks for reporting this bug and help making ubuntu better.

Can you please try installing the latest Maverick kernel from here:

Also, if this is of any help, before installing the k10temp module I could not invoke the command 'sensors'. This is the output when I run it now:

$ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +49.0°C (crit = +105.0°C)

k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter

Iwan, can you please try to reproduce the problem with Maverick live cd? as maverick have all the updated packages. e.g. acpi-support et al

Just tried the latest Maverick release and had same symptoms; Still nothing on /proc/acpi/fan and sensors-detect detected the temperature module k10temp, which in this case was already loaded. Only difference between Maverick and Lucid was that I had to manually add k10temp.

End result is same: $sensors returns the CPU temperature.

Fan still always on...

Quick update: I should mention that I do get 2 different fan speeds: Constantly on but slow and a higher RPM speed. It doesn't seem to be controlled by the kernel acpi modules but rather a hardware behavior, platform independent.

My CPU right now is at 39C and the fan is in its "quiet" state (still spinning but slower than the "top speed").

Because it is a brand new laptop the fan is quiet whether spinning fast or slow, but you can definitely tell when the speed changes.

I don't know how this happened but right now I just started my laptop and the fan is not on...

Core temp is 32C and the fan is completely off.

Is there a way to adjust the temperature when the fan comes on or off?
