Dual-monitor possible with top-bottom screen configuration only

When i work with my netbook 10,1" + VGA monitor, I can get dual-screen only if the two screen are configured one above the other. Don't work if I have one beside the other

Hi,
  I wonder if this is due to a hardware limitation; some cards can't handle more than 2048 pixels across.

Please provide:

the output of lspci | grep -i vga
the resolution of the two monitors
a copy of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log

For information, I didn't have this problem with Lucid.

right, the reason it works with the 15" is because its resolution is lower and the total doesn't go over the magic 2048 horizontal
limit.

You say it worked with Lucid; have you turned on Desktop effects or similar? I'm told that the limit is actual 4096 if a load of acceleration is turned off, and that doesn't work if compiz is on.

You are right, compiz was automatically turned off and i didn't have effect with LUCID and 19" monitor.

But today , I am with 17" monitor in dual screen (I work in many location, so with many different screen !) with marverick deskop, and with or without compiz effect, I have the same problem.

And Unity don't work with compiz !?!

  OK, so I think what you are saying is that on Lucid without compiz you could get >2048 horizontal but on Maverick even without it
it won't let you. FYI Bug 654515 is similar.

  albert23 on #ubuntu-x has pointed out that your problem may well be bug 619663 - can you attach a /var/log/Xorg.0.log from when it is trying but failing to run with dual head monitor?
We're looking for an error like '(EE) intel(0): Failed to allocate framebuffer. '
