Cannot sum a summation

When using the 'sigma' icon to sum a column of figures, it any of the cells being summed contain a summation the software will not include that cell in the new summation.
The summation - if typed - works, but typing is very tedious for creating a summation.

You are using Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala - released in October 2009 and supported until April 2011.

In Ubuntu 10.10, libreoffice-calc could not reproduce. Opened new libreoffice-calc file via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && soffice -calc

Performed sum of sum both typing and using the sigma icon successfully (please see example.ods).
