Bug Description

Problems when using Inkscape:

When trying to use any of the functions in the Extentions menu, none seem to work. I don't expect that this is a problem for everyone as it's too major but I am certain it's a fault and not user error.

For example, trying to desaturate a selection, you select 'desaturate' under 'colour' in the Extentions menu, a box flashes for a split second saying it is working and please wait, that disappears and the selection is unchanged. Trying to perform interpolation for example, the dialogue box appears, you adjust settings and hit 'apply'. The box remains and the 'live preview' checkbox deselects itself. A box flashes up for a split second saying 'interpolation is working, please wait' each time you click apply and nothing changes and the dialogue box remains in place until you hit 'close'.

In addition, all options in the Help menu fail except tutorials, 'about memory' and 'about Inkscape'. The frame of a dialogue box flashes up for a split second then nothing opens.

I got the software by clicking on 'installer' under Windows in the download section of inkscape.org. It all installed fine from what I can tell and I didn't change any settings etc.

Same issue as bug #643272 “[win32] 0.48; extensions do not work”?

could you confirm the presence of Python :
- go into a DOS window and switch to the \Inkscape\Python directory and type the command python, to see what happens?

In my case I get (on a somewhat older version of Inkscape):

C:\Program Files\Inkscape\python>python
Python 2.5.4 (r254:67916, Dec 23 2008, 15:10:54) [MSC v.1310 32 bit (Intel)] on win32
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.

I'm sorry, I'm not really IT savvy enough to do what you said. I got as far as bringing up a dos window. However, in the Inkscape folder in Program Files there is a file called python.exe and one called pythonw.exe in the python folder. Clicking python.exe brings up the error message: 'This application failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.'
Do you think I should try reinstalling it or changing some configurations? Thanks for your help.

Ok, in the DOS window I went to the directory Inkscape\Python and typed 'python' and it came up with: 'The system cannot execute the specified program.' It does seem to be the same bug as posted above by ~suv.
