Maverick? I'm not sure I can use production desktop for trials with (not necessarily safe) beta version. Any chance I can run it from USB stick without HDD modules built into kernel (to avoid chances to crunch my HDD filesystems)?

it might be that device misbehave but it is no reason for libmtp to panic on that
