No sound, or crap sound

Bug Description

Out of the box, there is no sound at all :-/
I noticed that liby2-14 "suggests" the package "yiff-server", so I installed that.
SAR suggest to start the sound server by typing "starty", but this program does not exist. I looked at the binaries that yiff-server provides, and tried launching "yiff" instead, as my best guess.
I now have sound in the game, and selected voice+engines+music, but all I get is horrible, high-pitched, monoton noise that's one can't stand. Well basically sound doesn't work :-(

No sound after installing the package. I installed yiff-server like the reporter suggested but the sound produced is UNBEARABLE! In retrospect, it's probably good that sound is off by default on this package. The game without sound is pretty tolerable.

This bug is getting old. How is this bug looking now Trouilliez vincent? Does everything work okay with the latest Feisty? If there's no response this bug will be marked as 'rejected'

I can't say about Feisty, as it's not released yet ! ;-)
However in Edgy, the bug is still 100% there, all intact, and honestly I very much fear/doubt that it will not be any better in Feisty...
I am also changing the bug status to "Confirmed", as it was set to "Needs info" for no apparent reason.

Upstream for this package appears dead since 2004 so unfortunately I don't see this bug getting fixed.

In my Acer laptop, I get NO sound at all! with Kubuntu64bits (FF_7.04) or Ubuntu 7.04.
And according to the forums, this is quite common with Ubuntu.
It's a shame, because, besides that, is an excellent distro! Please, put some more generic option that may run ;-)

Do you get no sound from anything in ubuntu or just from the game searchandrescue?

If the former is the case, this bug is the wrong one, and I'd suggest filing one against alsa ( https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-lib/+bugs/ ). When doing so, it might be very helpful to include the output of

lspci -v

to the bug report.

Thanks,
    Stefan.

I'm having problems with Yiff-server, which is preventing me from getting sound in Search and Rescue. Here's what I'm getting on installation of yiff-server:

Setting up yiff-server (2.14.5-2.2) ...
Starting Y Sound Server: ERROR.
invoke-rc.d: initscript yiff-server, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing yiff-server (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 yiff-server
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Running yiff-server --configure results in:

/dev/dsp: Cannot open for playing.

No one has touched yiff since 3 years, it's not being worked on. Searchandrescue isn't under development since 2004 either, so don't expect this bug to be fixed. At least not anytime soon.

Maybe yiff-server and searchandrescue should be taken off from the Ubuntu repositories.

Hell no ! ;-)
I mean, even without sound, it's still enjoyable to me... somehow ;-)
Also, there is no other such game in the repo that I kow of (civil helicopter flying), and it doesn't take that mch space, and I ma msure there zillions of more useless and much more obscure/unsued pacackages in the repo, that could be removed first ! ;-)

So I vote to keep it in the repo...

@Trouilliez

Yeah, it's still fun without the sound and if you put that Kevin Costner flick "The Guardian" in the DVD player and time it just right the sound sorta kinda works. ;-)

flightgear now supports helicopter simulation, even a CH-47 Chinook twin rotor!

Hum, but Flightgear is a simulator, not a mission game like SaR.
I sure do love Helicopter simulators, but Flightgear in this respect is, hum, pathetic :-/
I remember asking the FG devs about it once, and their answer was clear: in short, FG's engine isn't suited for Helis !
So for heli simulation I moved to X-Plane.. not Free I know, but there really isn't much of a choice at the moment.
