Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

When trying out the NEW 10.version ( same with both 10.04 and 10.10 ) I get a install screen but there is NO video settings for low video and I have a PCI Express Nivida video card with 512 megs DDR2 memory and where it would be doing something . . I only get a white screen with small color dots and NO MOUSE or any text ( also using a 20 inch flat panel monitor ) . . On 9.04 and 9.10 there is a LOW VIDEO install so it can be installed and then switch to the Nivida driver . . or leave it as the low video driver and since this is being installed on the DESKTOP and it will not install I can hit enter an Escape and nothing Happens . . I can't send anything but a description via this laptop ( running 9.10 )

*Well If I could see the screen I could give you more ! Screen crashes
because the graphics is not there, wrong set of drivers being installed
by the set up DAH ! ! . . YOU Need to have choices to get 10.10
installed like _LOW GRAHICS_ MODE like Ubuntu 9.10 has hint hint ! !
**I have A NIVDIA PCI EXPRESS WITH 512 DDR2 I do not know what th set up
is trying to install but it crashes

I really do sympathize with your situation but in order to help you, you have to provide more info about your issue and hardware. If you looked at the page I referred to, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Debugging, it would steer you in the right direction in terms of what is possibly going wrong with your computer and provide some workarounds. I am assuming that you are trying to use the Live CD on a computer that already has a version of Ubuntu installed on it. Even if you can not fully utilize the 10.04 and/or 10.10 Live CD to retrieve logs of usplash or Xorg crashing, you can provide more than just a description about your hardware and issues via your already working OS, 9.10.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Debugging lists several methods for retrieving debugging info such as entering the following commands in a terminal and attaching the files to this bug report.

lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.txt

sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.txt

With these files we could view the hardware you are using and search other bug reports and/or ubuntuforums.org, to see if other people are experiencing similar issues.

In one way that 10.04 and 10.10 differ from previous versions of Ubuntu is that the kernel handles setting screen resolutions (kernel mode setting, KMS), while in previous versions screen resolutions were handled by X (xorg.conf). That is why there is no "Low Graphics Mode", with KMS, the kernel is attempting to set the highest possible resolution that both the monitor and video card are capable of displaying.

While using the Live CD, I would suggest pressing the F6 key at the menu screen (where you can choose to install or just try K/X/Ubuntu) select the "nomodeset" boot option and continue to install/boot.

*Well about 2/3's the way thru UPDATE it froze up completley with Ubuntu
Studio 10.10 Does not like my Video card at all . . went to LOW
GRAPHICS MODE haha 1/2 of the screen was on one side and the other half
was over there had to run the mouse back wards to get to the other side
. . So I went back to 9.10 waaaaaaaaaaaaaa ! Maybe I should undo one of
the video plugs or run a HDMI cord from the video card to the HD TV . .
Would give me a MONSTER screen LOL 37 incher LOL .. I have a dual core
Intel CPU running at 3.4 gigahertz 3 gig of DDR ( PC3200 ) Hopefully
next year I make the jump to a fancier Motherboard and a faster CPU with
DDR2 for ram and a core2 quad IBM CPU
and a Nivdia video card . . Might get a different one from a different
company
