Same problem for me. Sound does not play back on my Acer Aspire 4930 using Ubuntu 10.10.
There is a similar issue Bug #617647 which can be probably merged with this one.

I'm unmarking this as an duplicate as it seems like model=auto solves it for 4930 but not for 7736z, so therefore they are different bugs.

Hi langmarp, you could try modifying the alsa-base.conf

In terminal, type: sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Add the following 2 lines at the end of the file, save and restart.

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

after this change, sound playback now works fine on my Acer 4930 using Ubuntu 10.10. Since you have a different Acer model, your results might vary.

If this doesn't work, try changing the value of model to 'acer' instead of 'auto'.

If nothing works, you might try installing the fix mentioned here

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/617647/comments/27

Though I did have any success (Acer 4930), folks having Acer 7736G reported positive results after installing the above mentioned fix.

Correction: In the last line of my previous comment, i meant to say that I did *not* have any success with the fix mentioned at

gbhuvanesh, can you verify that all inputs and outputs are working well with model=auto? If so, I'll ask upstream to remove the quirk for your hardware.

Hi David,

I have attached a zip file containing three output files from the alsa-info script for Acer 4930.

1. output from 10.04 with sound
2. output from 10.10 without sound
3. output from 10.10 with sound : after adding 'options snd-hda-intel model=auto' in alsa-base.conf

After adding model=auto in 10.10, I have verified that the internal speakers, headphone output and internal microphone work fine.
I cant verify line-in, HDMI out etc. as I don't have the required accessories right right now.

Some other observations:

1) As mentioned in comment#23 of Bug #617647 ,
alsamixer reports a different chip in 10.10 vs. 10.04.

10.10 Card: HDA Intel Chip: Intel Cantiga HDMI (Sound doesn't work)
10.04 Card: HDA Intel Chip: Intel G45 (Sound works)

2) Sound preferences --> Hardware --> Profile

10.10 : shows analog Stereo, digital stereo input and output, 5.1 Channel Surround output
10.10 (with model=auto) : shows analog Stereo, digital stereo input and output
10.04 : shows analog Stereo, digital stereo input and output

Let me know if you need any further information.
