Bug Description

to reproduce bug just open a gnome-terminal and mouse over the close minimize maximize buttons. They seem to do the opposite of what they should do. If you select the window(click on title bar) the problem seems to go away. In conclusion when you start up the application(e.g gnome-terminal) mouseover effect behaves strange. Sorry if this is stupid. Thanks anyway!

Theme name is Ambiance(default), on Maverick.

If look at the screenshot the minimize button on the gnome-terminal is lighten and
the cursor is not there so if i do a mouseover now it does the opposite it darkens
it. So it must be a problem with the state of the button. One more thing when i close
compiz the problem is fixed. And yes this happens with more than just gnome-terminal.

Hello
Probably is something related to your compiz, i cannot reproduce it in any way.
Can you try removing completely compiz and reinstall it to see if fixes.
Thanks

I purged it and installed it and the problem is still there. Anyway if nobody says anything
it's probably me so don't waste time on this.

I'm experiencing the same thing with my window buttons as well. For me it happens in all applications. If I quite compiz, the problem goes away. Once I launch compiz again, the problem returns.

Hello,

 I encounter the following problem under Ubuntu Natty with the "ThinMC" window border theme (see http://art.gnome.org/themes/metacity?page=4), does not highlight minimize, maximize and close buttons on mouse over. This happens if windows are not maximized. When maximized, the buttons are highlighted on mouseover. This behavior arises at least for the Terminal and Nautilus windows, but for others as well.

 As far as I remember, the same happened for other themes, too.

 Other windows (such Eclipse Indiogo M6a) do not presente this wrong behavior and correctly highlight the respective buttons.

 If is helpful:
 - some time ago, my Natty presented also the following behavior (this was corrected meanwhile): when maximized, neither Opera nor Firefox windows did not change the Window title when commuting between open browsing tabs; however, they changed the window title when windows were no longer maximized;
 - the following behavior occured at least once: when hovering mouse over a maximized Nautilus window button "maximize", then fastly double-clicking the window to un-maximize, the "maximize" button remained highlighted, even if now the window is no longer maximized; the respective minimize, maximize and close buttons are no longer responsive to mouse hovering (consistent with the behavior explained above about the un-maximized state of the window); see the attached screenshot.

Hello axeoth
I'm not expert in this things, but i think that a theme created for metacity has to run in metacity, so can you please test it running a metacity session, selecting at login screen, gnome classical (without effects) .
Thanks
Fabio

@Fabio Marconi
Thank you. Obviously, you are right. It was a metacity theme and it works well on Ubuntu Classic No Effects. From this point of view, ignore my previous comment.
OTOH, the behavior still remains a bit strange, but I admit this is not a top priority.
Thanks again.

 Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Since Natty is no longer supported, please do test on Ubuntu 12.04+ to see if the issue remains.
