As you have reported during testing with ubuntu-bug, that the image problem is also with gstreamer[direct output from the video].
The bug is not in cheese , it just reads the gstreamer pipeline. [gstreamer-error is the tag we use for when reporter notices the same error]

The webcam not being detected is a kernel regression.

switching tasks.

In natty, it's working fine, but I have to press the camera-on button (Fn-F10). I did not realize this before, and it may have been the problem in maverick.

I still think there is a bug, so I updated the description. I also think the status needs to be changed this to "confirmed". It certainly doesn't seem to be "fix released" since nothing was changed.

Neal McBurnett, The original reporter has closed the bug since it is working(read comment 5), kindly file a new bug using command:

I hope that upon further review and consideration, MIchael agrees that "Fix released" doesn't match what happened. If you really don't want my updated description here, or to have this bug reopened, I suggest at least changing the resolution here to "Invalid", or giving me some hints as to why "Fix released" would be appropriate.

Neal McBurnett, I dont know why you are worried about the bug status of someone else's bug which they have closed themselves.

All I'm saying is what the kernel QA team prefer.
Kernel team want each person to file their own separate bug, so that the bug will contain all the system details they require to investigate each person's bug. They are just asking that each person just file a bug and let them take care of it. :-)

Honestly, I'm not sure whether this is a bug or not, but I'm leaning towards no. I agree Neal, that having to press the camera button first is not intuitive. But System76 is at fault there, not Ubuntu.

So either (A) System76 intended camera to be on by default and you can turn it off with that key or (B) System76 intended camera to be off by default. I'm assuming that Ubuntu is getting it right and the camera is off by default by design. In which case, I think it's just bad hardware design and there's nothing Ubuntu should or can do.

One thing I didn't highlight earlier is that I am basically confirming Michael's suspicion that this works the same in Maverick as it does in Natty - i.e. nothing changed in the code base.

Note that MIchael and I also have the same hardware, so having a separate bug report for this seems to complicate rather than simplify things.

And I now see another part of the confusion. The bug was changed from cheese to the kernel before we discovered that it was an issue of the camera presumably not having power. So there was no kernel regression.

That's why "Fix Released" is the wrong status.

From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status
Fix Released: Ubuntu bug task: a fix was uploaded to an official Ubuntu repository

The issue is not specific to System76 machines. E.g. there is also a webcam button on the Advent 4211C notebook laptop (fn f6).

And as I noted in my now-deleted description clarification, the Cheese application refers to Help that is not there, so this is at least a documentation issue.

So I think the updated description is better and would be a service to a variety of users.
And I think "Fix Released" clearly wrong. Say "won't fix" if you like, but I think the integrity of Ubuntu's bug reports is important.
