- Fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64 bit.
- Hardware VMWare (i.e. no OpenGL support) with VMWare tools installed.
- Open System->Appearance and try to enable Visual Effects->Extra. You will get a error message "Desktop effects could not be enabled". This is correct since there is no OpenGL support.
- Run upgrade to 10.10 beta using "update-manager -d".
- When the "Installing the upgrade" process has to open the dialog box about "Configuring Grub.." it will not be shown in the foreground. It was not possible to move the window (Alt+F7 + keyboard not working). I was unable to press the button in the "Configuring Grub-p..." dialog to continue the upgrade. I was only able to click the check box. Clearly the Window Manager got broken in that session. I had to interrupt the upgrade process and so after the restart the system went in an unstable state / no login was possible.
Idea...
- Before starting the Distribution upgrade (after downloading all the required packages) request a system reboot and don't allow other programs to be run at the same time during the "Installing the upgrade..".
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the log files from '/var/log/ dist-upgrade/ ' to this bug report as separate attachments? Thanks in advance.
