On exiting the newest version chromium-browser, my machine invariably locks, and using alt+sysrq+i will not restart it. I had exactly the same problem with the latest releases of both the 64-bit and 32-bit linux versions of Google Chrome. Any ideas?

Hi Leon Simpson,

In order to investigate your bug report I need to know a little more information. What version of the Chromium browser are you using? I'm aware that they have a stable, a beta and a daily build repository.

Click on the Spanner in the top right corner of Chromium then click on "About Chromium" and tell me what version number you are using please :)

If you know, please include which repository you download from (the stable, the beta or the daily build).

Thanks!

Okay, it seems like you have the latest "stable" build. I am using the daily release build in Ubuntu 10.04 and do not experience this difficulty.

There are a number of bug reports about Chromium crashing (bug 528655, bug 520293) but none seem to detail that their system locks up. Perhaps a more serious version of the aforementioned bugs?

What would it mean to be a "more serious version" of an aforementioned bug? And how do I treat it?

Honestly, I am not certain of a real fix but you could perhaps try some of the beta or daily release builds of Chromium to see if that helps your problem.

You can find the appropriate channels here:

Same here.
On browser exit, the whole machine goes into a hard lockup, with mouse cursor freezing, display freezing, network freezing keyboard leds flashing.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on Thinkpad R50e

I'd googlde a little and found that there is already same issue that actively discussed here:
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=54617
Crash Log is here: http://chromium.googlecode.com/issues/attachment?aid=3487437334099379653&name=20100910_001.jpg&token=7501e96d430ed6526e35a8eb732d8ade&inline=1

Looks like guys on google forums already found the reason and solution:

thanks

The SUID sandbox is using network namespaces and that's triggering the issue, that's why it's not panicking without it.
It's a kernel issue.

Does it also happen with a 2.6.35 kernel (like in Maverick)?

I'd never tested on Maverik but you can check the issue here: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=54617
There are guys that tried it on various kernels.

This is most likely a duplicate of 616745.

I have been told that 2.6.35 does not have the bug.
As a workaround on Lucid, try blacklisting phonet,

namey have a file in /etc/modprobe.d named blacklist-phonet.conf with

blacklist cdc_phonet
blacklist phonet

Obviously a proper kernel patch based on that on the google forum would be better.

Closing due to the last update to this bug being almost 7 years old. Please file a new bug if this still applies to recent releases of chromium-browser.
