sata_sil no longer detects sata hard disk

Hi!

I own an A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard with an integrated Silicon Image SATA controller, the SiI 3112, and Ubuntu doesn't boot any more since I've migrated to Maverick. The boot process hangs just after GRUB step saying "Gave up waiting for root device".

I've tried to boot on a live USB (today daily live image) and my hard disk doesn't show up in Nautilus nor in the /dev directory.

if your disk showed typing
sudo fdisk -l
you can try to restore grub from liveCD

I've already tried to restore GRUB using a live CD of Lucid, I've tried to chroot to my system partition (after binding /dev, /proc and /sys) to reinstall the kernel but nothing worked. With a live CD of Maverick my hard disk doesn't show up in Gparted and it doesn't even show up in the /dev directory.

No. The disk isn't present anywhere: not in gparted, not in the disk utility, not in the /dev directory, nowhere… But the disk works as GRUB succeeds to load.

Hello,

The GRUB screen appears every time. I've already tried to replace the line root=UUID=XXXX by root=/dev/sda but it hasn't solved the problem. The system stopped booting, told me the error message and gave me a busybox shell where I've seen that my hard disk drive wasn't present under the /dev directory.

Sorry, I'm not sure you understand my problem: not only the partition can't be seen anywhere but the disk itself can't be seen. In addition when I boot a live CD of Lucid Lynx I've no problem the disk is here and all the partitions are present too.

I confirm that in Maverick SATA disks are not seen anymore with SATA SIL 3112.

The SIL 3112 is correctly identified, but drive(s) attached are not shown.

It works well on Lucid, as i've reinstalled it from LiveCD.

I've just seen that my DVD drive connected with an IDE cable (the hard disk is connected in SATA) isn't recognized too (I've used a live USB to test it).

I have a similar experience with a small difference. I have two SATA drives, both are seen in BIOS but one is no longer available after I upgraded to Maverick. So (if I have the drives connected in teh right order, Ubuntu boots from GRUB but hangs at login, giving me teh option to Wait, Skip or Manually fix the missing drive. If I skip, the boot continues fine but of course I can't see the second drive at all, not in GParted, not with fdisk -l..
