Bug Description

I am running Ubuntu Maverick 32 bit beta fully updated to Sept 11th 2010. The system will freeze at random, except for the mouse. I have had this problem on 64 and 32 bit versions on two computers. The only thing these machines have in common is that they both have nvidea graphics. It does not make any difference weather I am using the open source or proprietary graphics drivers. The system has run for several hours at times before freezing up.

I am not finding anything in the system logs to give me any clues to what is causing this. When the system freezes, nothing responds at all but the mouse still works. Only a hard re-boot will get the system working again.

Others have mentioned this issue in the development forum but none of us have figured out how to obtain any useful information. I have run memtest on both of my effected computers, the memory tests good.

Please advise me on how to proceed with this.

I have this problem too also using nVidia graphics. Have only been using the open source drivers. Will get this same freeze occasionally on my Lucid install too. I have tried changing BIOS settings with no prevail and have also turned compositing off and quit docky to see if it helps at all but still get the Freeze.
System is 32bit and fully up to date as of 21 Sept. 10. Have been getting these freezes for a LONG time though. Probably somewhere since the start of Maverick.
Will keep digging and try to find some logs or the problem.

Slug71, carefully look over all of your BIOS settings. I found a few odd settings on my system, made a couple of changes and the lock ups have stopped.

Those are the output of kern.log and sys.log.

@exploder91, have made a few changes to the BIOS but it hasnt seemed to do the trick and there really isnt anything else i think it could be.

Hello, sorry for not responding for so long.
I will run the above command as soon as I get a freeze again.
About the mouse activity: I did not observe any link between the mouse and the hangups, it happens when the computer is idle, or when I watch a movie too. At that time, usually I don't even have a mouse plugged in.

With the mouse or (maybe with gnome) I have different problems:
sometimes the clicks are not working correctly, like when I click a window it disappears. when I click on something else the window mentioned before reappears. Usually these times I have to restart the gdm.
Also with the touchpad I have problems sometimes when turning it on/off.
When this issue shows up, usually I can resolve the problem with switching back and forth from a tty.

Probably this is not related to the freezes, but maybe it helps.

Thank You, Laszlo.

Dear devs, how can we help?
Can we turn on some switch to get more debug info?

The hang ups somehow stopped. Maybe the latest kernel update or turning of SATA helped. Not sure, thank You anyway.

Using fully updated Maverick on an Aspire One, never had the problem previously. Nothing in dmesg or logs that I see, but every time I freeze I notice egrep is using a ridiculous amount of cpu and ram. Killing egrep stops the hang every time. It happens when my computer is idle and slightly more often when Firefox is open. Random hangs.

I wonder if NVIDIA drivers are not allocating memory correctly.
