Bug Description

I updated my computer today using update-manager. I was not offered nor did I do the "distro upgrade" or whatever that option is that increases the possibility of breaking things in development versions of Ubuntu. I was also obstinate enough to have installed arc-colors, gnome-colors, and shiki-colors and I had not removed arc-colors when it was removed from the repositories. As the upgrade finished, I got an error that something didn't work right. The log indicates that it was the issue with arc-colors and gnome-colors conflicting.

This version of gnome-colors should have removed the previous arc-colors before trying to installing the arc wallpapers. I believe this was intended as the fix for bug 564769 but it didn't work for me in update-manager.

I am attaching the terminal log; it's got a bunch of other packages in the list that were also upgraded at the same time.

I feel bad, it was just a simple wish list thing, and Andrew seemed to have had all the bases covered. He specified breaks and replaces arc-brave etc.

Is it possible that "conflicts" should also have been specified? Or is it because the arc-* packages have been deleted from the repos?

What happens now? If there's a further update to shiki-colors, can that make everything right again?

Even now, do the arc-* packages still show as being installed on your system?

The answer is simple: shiki-colors breaks & conflicts arc-colors <= 2.7-1ubuntu1, but you have 2.7-1ubuntu2 installed.

Changed in shiki-colors-murrine (Ubuntu):
status: New → Triaged
milestone: none → ubuntu-10.10

No, it's possible (check the log) and the publishing history: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/arc-colors/+publishinghistory

Wow, good catch. So to have 2.7-1ubuntu2 installed, you'd have to have installed Maverick before June 12?

So, for my information, what happens when a package is deleted? Nothing deletes it from the user's machine? And what's the consequence for Jeremy's machine? Was it just a one-time error and from now on, he'll be ok?

Would a good test be to get myself a Karmic, install shiki-* and arc-*, then upgrade to Lucid and then Maverick? Or is that unnecessary?

Yes.

If a package is deleted, it won't deleted from the user's machine. The user will see (in Synaptic) that the package show up in the "Installed (local or obsolete)" group and can remove it manually.

The problem will persist until he removes arc-colors manually or (better) we fix shiki-colors.

It's unnecessary, but if you want to test it, you need to install version 2.7-1ubuntu2. An upgrade from karmic wouldn't trigger this issue.

@Andrew: Do we want to move the wallpapers from arc-colors to shiki-colors in Debian too?

No problem Jeff. This is what beta testing is for.

Probably, but I'm not sure... The old version of GDM is still in use
as the gdm package. The new version is in the gdm3 package. It seems
that gdm3 is now used in the default Debian GNOME install, so it might
be time to make the transition.

As the original reporter, I'm closing this. It only affects users of an old development version so isn't broken anymore nor can it be fixed this far afterwards.
