open with doesnt give expected gnome result

Bug Description
when trying to "open with" in firefox it doesnt give the option of all application gnome knows about...
for example, install acrobat reader and then try to open a pdf from a webpage with it...you will have to choose other and then manually find the binary...this is a bit archaic...why cant firefox just show a list of available applications like gnome does when it does "open with"...
